Here’s the link to the video in case the one in the player doesn’t work. Just when I thought I’ve heard it all regarding clinical trials, my buddy Dave Dartez shares a story about his friend who is participating in an outpatient clinical trial where he smokes marijuana and his behavior is analyzed. Sounds like he is definitely having a good experience, not to mention he is also being compensated for his time and travel. We include interesting stories like these to illustrate how diverse the clinical trials industry is. On one hand you have people trying to find cures for cancer, and on the other, you have people who are analyzing the benefits of marijuana. It is very important to understand that the clinical trials industry has over 20 Million Americans participating every year so it is not unusual to be able to find, uhh shall we say unique(?), studies such as these! We will keep you posted on whether Dave actually joins this clinical trial…

Local IRB’s and Central IRB’s in Clinical Trials
What is the difference between a Local IRB and a Central IRB? from Don Walters on Vimeo.
In today’s video, Don and myself tackle what Institutional Review Boards (IRB’s) are, and then we get into the different types of IRB’s that are out there. The differences between the two are important to the research clinics and the study sponsors, but may also be important to the clinical trial participants themselves. We get into the details of each type of IRB in this post.
Better Research Clinics: Academic or For Profit?
In clinical trials, there are generally two different types of research facilities: Academic institutions or Privately run clinics. In this video, I highlight some of the similarities and differences between the two, and hopefully give future clinical trial participants a better understanding of what types of options they have available to them when choosing a clinical trial facility.
Little Things Matter In Clinical Trials
In clinical trials, understanding and getting to know your study participant, is crucial. In all clinical trials, getting good quality data and feedback from the trial participants is the only way to measure the efficacy of the study drug. Don provides some suggestions for the clinical trial professionals out there on exactly how to do this.
